Pakistan Monument is a national heritage museum located on Shakarparian Hills in Islamabad, Pakistan. The monument symbolizes national unity to cover an area of 2.8 hectares. It is one of the most popular picnic destinations in Islamabad.
Monument Structure
Pakistan monument is shaped as a blooming flower with a petal-shaped structure. The inner walls of the petals showcase Lahore Fort, Khyber Pass, Badshahi Mosque and Minar-e-Pakistan. The monument open to a marble terrace offering a bird’s eye view of the Islamabad city. The four main petals are representation of the four provinces namely Balochistan, Punjab, Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The three small petals represent three territories such as Gilgit-Baltistan, Tribal Areas and Kashmir.
Wax Museum
Pakistan Monument Museum includes a wax museum showcasing important events that played a critical role in leading to the Pakistan movement. The facilities contain a reference library, conference hall and audio-visual archive with a 62-seat capacity auditorium known as Panorama Hall. the complex also receives 1500 tourists per day on average totalling at 0.57 million visitors in 2015.
From the airplane, the monument looks like a star at the center and a crescent moon referring to the walls. These represent the star and crescent on the Pakistan’s flag. It was planned and envisioned by Uxi Mufti Son of Mumtaz Mufti in 2005. The plan to construct a national monument in Islamabad was taken over by the Ministry of Culture under Hamad Kashif. Pakistan Council of Town Planners and Architects arranged for a national competition around a theme to signify unity, strength and dedication to Pakistani people. This helped to represent a free independent nation.
About 20 submissions were placed, out of which only 3 were shortlisted. Also, the design proposed by Arif Masoud was chosen for construction. It revolved around the development of the country. The complex was priced at Rs 600 million.
