Background
Lahore was the center of business for the Mughals. It was turned into an imperial city by Emperor Akbar, who also established the nearby Lahore Fort. Aurangzeb, the 6th Mughal Emperor also chose Lahore as a location for his new imperial mosque. Unlike the previous emperors, it was not a main patron of architecture and art.
Mosque is built to commemorate the military campaigns against the insurgent leader Shivaji Bhonsle. The construction of the mosque also exhausted the Mughal treasury by weakening the Mughal state. To make it important, it was built directly from Lahore fort and the Alamgiri Gate. It was also built by Aurangzeb during the mosque construction.
Architecture
Lahore also has a significant regional style mainly inspired by Persian architecture styles. The Wazir Khan Mosque is decorated with a Kashan style tile work. Aurangzeb also selected an architecture plan similar to Shah Jehan’s for Jamia Masjid in Delhi. Both mosques have red sandstones with a white marble inlay.
